Stop saw. Save fingers.

Sawstop

SawStop. They say it’s the world’s safest table saw. Apparently there’s 60,000 table saw related injuries every year in the US alone. One every 9 minutes. Youch! This puppy puts an end to the serious injuries because it stops the blade within 1/200th of a second and retracts it out of harm’s way. Pretty cool tech all round, and if’n you don’t believe take a look at the hot-dog demo video

.

The SawStop safety system includes an electronic detection system that detects when a person contacts the blade. The system induces an electrical signal onto the blade and then monitors that signal for changes. The human body has a relatively large inherent electrical capacitance and conductivity which cause the signal to drop when a person contacts the blade. Wood has a relatively small inherent capacitance and conductivity and does not cause the signal to drop.

  • Watching the “demo video” the saw blade appears to retract rather than stop !……… Is this the case ?

  • oops ! Missed the first video……….great idea !!

  • The blade stops. If you read the description on how it works on the suppliers website, you will see that the blade is jammed into an aluminium block which causes the blade to retract.
This effectively ruins the blade plus requires the device to be replaced at quite a high place but hey what price fingures or a hand.
    Quite incredible really.
