Tex2 is a Java application for mobile phones that lets you send text messages using your Internet data plan rather than the standard SMS network. The result is a much cheaper charge per message – around 0.5p vs 12.0p for standard SMS. The catch is that your recipient has to be running the Tex2 program as well, but there’s an ‘Invite a friend’ feature, so that may not be a huge problem. Sounds quite cool.
tex2 phone software lets you send messages in a different way to normal texts, for a lot less money. You can use tex2 to send and receive mobile emails, too. When someone sends you a tex2, you get an alert. Click the download button and we’ll send a message to your phone containing a link to our download site. Follow the instructions and you’re away.
Loads of people have tried to do this now, and simply put – it doesn’t work. Wanna know why…..?
In no particular order:
1)Minimum data fees (lots of netoworks have them) mean you end up paying quite a bit more than the few bits of data it takes to send a message
2) You pay to receive messages too
3) That is if you are logged on, which you need to be to get a message which means it’s a hell of a lot less convienient than SMS
4) Leave yourself logged in? Nope, doesn’t work as most of the time the network will drop the connection
5) Use a lot of SMS? Get a big bundle, they aren’t that expensive
6) Most people can’t be arsed to load the software and run it vs just sending a normal SMS
7) Most times the application can’t access your phonebook – pain in the arse if you send a lot of text.

12p per text message? That’s insanity. I pay $5 USD for unlimited text messaging per month and usually use 500 or so.
