Phonevite – quick and easy voice broadcasts via your phone

Phonevite

Phonevite. ‘Broadcast your voice’. VoIP meets Web 2.0 meets megaphone. Use it to broadcast announcements, invitations, reminders and other stuff to lots of people via the telephone. The whole thing centres around a slick administration panel on the Web site, through which you organise your address and groups list, as well as view responses to your broadcast etc. Record your message – using either your phone or a special IE browser recording plugin – and then either schedule it for a future date/time or press send to despatch the audio immediately.

It’s very well thought out and nicely done, take a look at the screencast to get a good idea of the functionality. The two reservations I have are first, the fact that everything has to be done from the web interface. Nowadays a mobile phone interface is just about essential for this type of application, to let you send those spontaneous messages (maybe a Java MIDP app?). And two, the Internet Explorer only requirement. A quick look at the company blog however reveals that they’re working on a Firefox version which is good news, and they’re also working hard to deliver the service outside of the US, which is even better.

All in all, though, I like this *a lot*. It’s clean, very very useful (think mass emergency notifications and stuff) and since it’s free at the moment, the price is excellent. It’s a great example of the convergence of phone, data and Internet and deserves to really take off big time. Hurry up with the international version guys!

A Phonevite is a broadcast session in which you send a selected audio message to a group of phone numbers. Each Phonevite is a separate event/session. In each Phonevite, you will have the options to record a new Voice Name or choose an existing one, to record a new message or select an existing one, and to enter a list of phone numbers and/or add existing group/s of phone numbers.

  • Red, Thanks for the great review! We definitely are looking into launching outside the US, and the UK would be one of the first destinations.

With regards to the mobile interface, it’s coming too as well.
