How do you find water in the desert? If you’re in or near Lima, Peru, all you have to do is look for this cool billboard, which grabs moisture from the desert air and converts it into filtered drinking water.

Created through a partnership between the University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) in Lima and the advertising agency MAYO-DRAFT FCB, this billboard stands along the Pan-American Highway, the nifty device helps local residents get clean drinking water while also generating interest in the study of engineering at the university. The electrical system grabs moisture from the humid air via reverse osmosis and delivers purified drinking water through small ducts at the foot of the billboard, and down to a tap at the base of the structure.

In an area with little annual rainfall but an average of 98 percent humidity, this remarkable billboard provides a unique potable water solution. It produces 96 liters (over 25 gallons) of water each day for the locals and travelers alike, and, since its installation in December 2012, has already delivered an impressive 9,450 liters (2,496 gallons) of potable water out of thin air.
