A Fast Fix for Broken Windows – using SFC to recover a corrupted installation

Quick tip to bookmark if you ever come up against a Windows XP or 7 installation that won’t run properly because something is corrupted.  Go to Start –  Run (or fire up a command line as admin) and enter in sfc /scannow . System File Checker will check all the Windows system files to make sure they’re in place and working properly, and repair as necessary. More here.

 Sometimes one of the important Windows system files can get corrupted. Then you may get messages about missing DLL files or have other indications that there is a problem. This tip will discuss repairing the system with System File Checker (SFC).
