Acoustic Metamaterial – this innovation is a new way to block out noise

The modern world is super noisy. Technology makes a lot of sounds and many of them aren’t what we could call pleasant. They’re just loud but unfortunately noise canceling options are unwiedly and unattractive. That may change in the future with Acoustic Metamaterial, the new material that can cancel out 94% of sound.

Generally speaking, soundproofing involves thick padding on walls. It’s a pretty simple concept but it also looks terrible and takes up a lot of space. This new material is made of silicone and 3D printed using math. The end result is a silicone ring structure that amazingly does what it says it can do.

The applications for this are enormous as it can be customized for a variety of spaces and tasks. Including spaces that don’t traditionally have any sort of soundproofing, like the inside of the an MRI machine. Imagine how much less stressful the process would be if you didn’t have to listen to the sound the machine made? This is still in development but the possibilities are exciting!
