Altek Leo Android CameraPhone – 14 megapixel camera takes the cell phone to a new planet

Altekleo

This Altek Leo mobile phone comes with a 14 megapixel camera and three times optical zoom. Or should we say, this 14 mp camera with 3 x optical zoom comes with an Android 2.1 mobile phone embedded inside? Either way, it’s a scary example of just how fast this technology is moving right now, and doesn’t bode well for the long term health of the budget compact camera companies.

There’s no clue as to the quality of the images this thing puts out yet (and we all know by now that more megapixels does not equate to better image quality, right?), but the mere fact that this much tech can be crammed into this form factor suggests that the phone market is soon to gobble up the snappy snap market as it’s currently doing to the GPS nav device market. They’re expecting it out on shelves within the next couple of months at around $499.00 retail.

Nokia’s 12-megapixels are impressive, but Altek reckon there’s still room in smartphones for a few more pixels. They brought their Android 2.1 smartphone, the Altek Leo, along to CommunicAsia 2010 this week, to demonstrate exactly what 14-megapixels, a Xenon flash and a 3x optical zoom look like in a handset. According to CNET Asia, the Leo should drop in Q4 2010, priced at the equivalent of $499; check out a video demo after the cut.
