Amazon Fires – the man made blaze is bad news for emissions

If you haven’t heard by now, the Amazon is on fire. This isn’t a wildfire, like the types you see in Spain or California during dry seasons, these fires are man made and the last step in deforestation of the area. Although the rain forest can have dry spells, they are nothing like the devastation that these man made fires are causing.

The fires are lit after trees are cut down and dried out. The ash fertilizes the ground which is then used as pasture for beef cattle. This practice is changing the ecosystem of the forest in unpredictable ways making areas outside of the cleared ones vulnerable.

The Amazon creates a good deal of oxygen so it’s loss is a problem there but also destroying the forest also releases a good deal of carbon which means emissions go up. As you may remember, this is bad. The overall effect of these fires is unclear but ideally, they will be stopped and the land allowed to heal.
