Amazon Studios are looking for your TV and movie scripts

Have you ever sat in a movie theater and half way through the show thought ‘I could do better than this script’? Or groaned in amazement at the corny way a plot unfolded in a television play you were watching? Most of us at one time or another have probably had a great idea for a movie or program, but had no idea how to make it come alive. Well now there’s a solution.

Amazon Studios is a clever and innovative program from the online retail giant which makes use of crowdsourced critiques and online communities to encourage and develop new entertainment for the masses. All you need to do is come up with an idea and upload the pilot or movie script to the site, either publicly or privately. You can also upload short video ideas, and there are contests for Best Trailer and Best Promo video, as well as regular writing assignments on offer.

From the moment you upload, the ideas/scripts will either be quickly dismissed or will picked up as a potential, and then worked on with the Amazon Studios development team or members of the public if you’ve chosen public review. Once a script/idea is uploaded, Amazon get the otpion to buy it for $200,000 ($55,000 for an episodic series) for a 45 day period which can be extended on other payments.

In other words, you get a chance at real money. The project has a deal with Warner Studios, which means that successful projects have a possibility of becoming a major commercial work, although we suspect you’ll need to have something extremely sellable to qualify. We think that overall it’s a great scheme though, and something that should be replicated as far and wide as possible.

If you’re more into the idea of crowdfunding your ideas, then Kickstarter.com is proabably a better bet, although you do need to start with a substantial fan base and a clear project plan and goals in order to make it work successfully. Great to see alternative opportunities opening up for art across the world.
