Apple set to launch Mac App Store on January 6

The App Store for the iOS platform has been nothing short of successful. This was one of the first times that there was a single place to track down all of the relevant software for a particular platform. The idea revolutionized the way we looked at applications for the smartphone. Now Apple is wanting to take that a step further by announcing the Mac App Store will launch on January 6.

Sure, there are plenty of ways to get applications onto your Mac, but again, there isn’t one specific place where you’re going to find a collection of the best. With the new Mac App store, that all changes. This is good for the end user, because now they can easily track down software that they need, or just want. Apple’s polished store should make this just as easy as buying apps on the iPhone.

The new store is also great for developers. This gives them a great place to sell their software without having to deal with paying for hosting and other overhead costs. Apple has already stated that developers will be setting their own price and will be receiving a 70/30 split on revenue. The real question here is whether or not we’re going to see some of the same restrictions placed on applications that we’ve seen in the pas with the iTunes App Store. At least you don’t have to hack your Mac to run software that isn’t provided via the new store.
