ASCAP declares war on free culture

Ascapvscc

So the folk at ASCAP (the US society of composer, authors and publishers) are currently soliciting funds to combat those naughty people at Creative Commons, the Electronic Freedom Foundation and other supporters of the free culture movement. Seems like they don’t like the idea of creative people having a number of copyright licenses to choose from, especially ones which encourage free content distribution.

“At this moment,” the letter says, “we are facing our biggest challenge ever. Many forces including Creative Commons, Public Knowledge, Electronic Frontier Foundation and technology companies with deep pockets are mobilizing to promote “Copyleft” in order to undermine our “Copyright.”

“If their views are allowed to gain strength, music creators will find it harder and harder to make a living as traditional media shifts to online and wireless services. We all know what will happen next: the music will dry up, and the ultimate loser will be the music consumer.”

Apparently they need at least $5 from as many of their members as possible in order to “advance our agenda in Washington”. Absolutely amazing (and the scare tactics are totally bogus of course).
