In a world dominated by video games, I imagine it’s hard for toymakers to keep kids interested in old-fashioned board games. That’s probably why Hasbro has been working hard to update their classic games to bring them into the 21st century. We already saw what was being done with Monopoly, but it appears that Battleship has received the same treatment.
The Monopoly makeover seemed like a logical one. It helped take some of the annoyance out of keeping track of money and mortgages. However, Battleship was already a simple game, there was no real need to add an infrared scanner to it. Unfortunately that seems to be exactly what they’ve done. In fact, it looks as though the game has been given a complete overhaul. They’ve even added spy planes to snoop on your opponent and such. This is definitely not the game we played as kids. Look for it this fall for around $50.
