BBK BitTorrent Box – HD Android media player streams torrents to your TV

Many years ago one of the big questions on the minds of consumer electronics executives was how to merge the living room TV, the games PC and the Internet into something that was greater than the sum of their parts.

Cable didn’t really do it properly, games consoles also delivered only part of the story, and eventually the subject went away as mobile devices and tablets took over the collective attention. Funny thing is, it now looks like the process is happening anyway, via what’s called the Smart TV.

The idea is you plug a box into a TV (not just a set top cable box, but an Internet connected Android or Apple box) and you’ve got yourself a television which can browse, search, play games, stream video and music and generally rock your leisure time life.

Which brings us to the BBK BitTorrent Box, a high definition Android media player which delivers not only standard video, audio and Internet to your TV, but can also stream BitTorrent content to your set in real time.

This is something of a big deal, insofar as it’s the first real evidence we have that BitTorrent (BT) has ambitions to move out of the piracy laden backstreets and into our homes and hearts. Now anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that even though BT is best known as the primary channel for pirated content, it also offers a gloriously efficient way for the media industry to deliver legal content to the world.

It’s fast (ish), has great peer to peer transmission efficiency, and there are already a ton of sites using it for legal delivery of all sorts of media and general files. So the arrival of this box is public proof that BT may at last be about to come out of the darkness and into the light. Watch this video demo of a different prototype box by the BitTorrent dudes…the interesting bit starts at 1:02.

As well as streaming BT content , the new box can run Android apps and games, act as a media storage device or PVR via the USB ports and act as a bridge between your smartphone or tablet and your TV. It can even facilitate a web cam feed from your phone to your television, for those ad hoc moments when you need to keep tabs on the puppies in the garage.

The box features WiFi, USB 2, HDMI out, and integrated support for streaming via uTorrent. It is compatible with just about every known media file format ever known and costs €89.99 including a remote control.
