The leprechauns have been at it again. Not content with building teeny tiny mobile phones, minuscule cameras and ridiculously small airplanes, they’ve now gone and shrunken a PC down to the size of a credit card. Complete with 2GB of RAM, a 128 GB SSD drive and Intel processor capable of running Windows 7 or Ubuntu Linux. And if that’s not enough it’s totally waterproof and fireproof via a custom epoxy coating.
The BioDigital PC features a dual core 1.86GHz Intel X86 processor with integrated graphics and 64bit architecture, which means it should cope with most real world tasks, and because it can fit into a wallet (admittedly at 8x5x.6cm you’ll need a fairly robust wallet), it’s the ultimate portable computer.
The developers have also developed a reader unit for the product, which lets you simply plug in the card and get a full blown computer environment from a keyboard, mouse and monitor. A lot more portable than a luggable laptop computer.
Apparently, according to the specs there’s also a capacity for five USB ports tucked in there somewhere, but we’re baffled where they’ll fit in such a small form factor. We think they’re adding in the reader rather than the basic credit card.
The price for all this luxurious state of the art tech starts at around $300, which makes it affordable, but not really Raspberry Pi cheap by any stretch. The question for would be buyers is if the added performance of this device is more important than a cheap price, and whether having something which is totally water and fire proof makes sense in your particular 3rd floor cubicle office.
how is it powered? how is it cooled? what is this?
I believe the answer is ‘a dock’. :)
External power supply.
