Blue Spark SL – The BEST Microphone for Tech-Videos! + TEST [REVIEW]

If you’re a bit of an audiophile, you probably know Blue. They make the best microphones and with the Blue Yeti they also have the best USB-microphone ever sold. However, if you’re looking to step your game up even further, check out the Blue Spark SL!

The Blue Spark SL comes in a wooden box, which already indicates that this is a very niche and premium product. It has a good weight to it and looks very retro in my opinion. On the microphone itself you can find two switches: -20db and a high pass filter. The first one is pretty self explanatory and mostly used in loud environments. The high pass filter is for detailed and more nuanced sound. It also clears out a lot of white noise – if you would experience that – on the background.

Off course you also need something to mount this on, que the Blue Compass. This broadcast boom arm attaches to your table via a clamp you need to tighten and has cable management built in = NICE! It’s pretty versatile with the three ‘checkpoints’, but a bit stiff when you first set it up. I would suggest attaching the microphone before doing the last adjustments. However, this is a very nice arm, that’s durable, looks professional and does the job.

As you might know, the Blue Spark SL is an XLR-microphone, which means you need and XLR-input like a Zoom recorder. If you don’t have this, or don’t want to spend money on it, you can buy the Blue Icicle. This again has a pretty cool – cold – name and converts the XLR-signal to USB, so you can connect this to your pc or mac. This way you can record your audio in Audacity for example. Pretty cool ay.

VERDICT

The Blue Spark SL is not cheap, but keep in mind that this is a professional microphone. It has a lot of bass to it and is very clear and crisp (check out the video for a test on this!). Besides the fact that it looks great, I would definitely recommend this. If you have a budget: this has to be your first professional broadcasting or youtube-microphone. Really, you can’t go wrong with this one. The accessories are not really needed, but are really helpful. Both are made out of very good quality, so again: you can’t go wrong! You can find the Blue Spark SL here.
