Brass Monkey is like a cloud based Nintendo Wii on your smartphone [Daily Freeware]

The Internet is changing everything, and especially in the world of entertainment. Nowadays you can watch television, listen to music, watch movies and play games using the ubiquitous network connection we call the Web. It’s astonishing how fast it’s advanced in just a few years. All of which means it’s great to see innovative new applications hit the scene, especially ones which really make a bold move into uncharted territory.

The new Brass Monkey games platform is one such idea. At its heart is a fairly conventional cloud based games service, delivering rather basic but fun games over the Web using a web browser. So far nothing that new. But there’s a twist. Instead of being tied to using your mouse and keyboard for a controller, the developers have tied the whole thing to your smartphone, so you can now take advantage of wireless Nintendo Wii type control of the game.

The system works by using your normal WiFi connection to bind the phone and online game together. After you download a small browser plugin and install a free app on your phone (both iOS and Android are supported) you can control the navigation of the games catalog and the actual games themselves using your handset. In practice, once you give the system a little time to synch properly, it works well. You swing the phone or punch a button and things happen on screen almost instantaneously. Pretty cool.

The games are a little sparse and basic right now, especially compared to some of the more sophisticated Flash and HTML5 offerings, but there’s no doubt that the selection will increase and improve over time as the platform matures. There’s also full multiplayer options available for those who like playing real human opponents. The one very neat thing is the fact that you can easily connect your laptop to a large screen TV via HDMI and you’ve got yourself an XBox games console type experience without the extra expenditure.
