Request to PRs – aaaaarrrrghh……

A short request to the PR folk out there. Please don’t send us any more press releases relating to: a) Gadget cases. Have you any idea at all just how AWFUL these things are? What, they keep your handheld warm, cosy, safe and BORING?? b) iPhone stands. Who cares? No really. c) Plastic screen protectors for cell phones. Mind numbingly dreary. d) iPod docks. Ditto. Unless they’re nuclear powered and come with a signed copy of The Audacity of Pope. e) Cutesy…

YouTube broadcasting 1080p – YouTube goes higher definition

Better call a plumber, YouTube is broadcasting 1080p and pretty soon that series of tubes might start slowing down. Starting next week, anything that was uploaded in high definition will be available for viewing in 1080p. You’ve been warned. [Photo from Flickr] We’re excited to say that support for watching 1080p HD videos in full resolution is on its way. Starting next week, YouTube’s HD mode will add support for viewing videos in 720p or 1080p, depending on the resolution…

Compile A Virus – Trojans in Software Environments

I’ve been trialing Tidy Favorites, a visual bookmark application, for the last week or two. Things were going well until this morning when I had a pop up from my Trend Micro Anti Virus warning me about Troj_Induc.A being found in my Tidy Favorites executable file. Odd but no worries, I’ve had false positives before and a quick check of the Tidy Favorites FAQs and yes, they mention that some aspects of Tidy Favorites can be detected as false positives…

Hammacher Schlemmer’s Walk on Water Ball – a follow up

I’ve got to hand it to the peeps at Gizmodo, they know how to road test a product. Remember the Walk on Water Ball from a couple of weeks ago? Well you can see one of the Gizmodo readers in action in their Walk on Water Ball here, when I say in action I mean, inaction. Looks like it was nice weather for it too. Red Ferret commenter bob called it and Gizmodo commenter Nick proved it. This ball is…

Rumors of a BMW Electric Scooter

Unnamed sources at BMW report that a new electric scooter could debut at an upcoming motorcycle show sometime in late 2010 and put in production in 2011, according to Spain’s Solo Scooter website. If the rumor mill is right, this new scooter would sport a lithium ion battery pack, have a range of about 155 miles or three hours of continuous use and a top speed of 75 miles per hour. No word on the exact body style of the…

Red Ferret Competition – win an Elite Laser worth $400.00

I’ve been having a sporadic email discussion with Wicked Lasers, purveyors of various laser products, for a year or so. They’ve been angling to get me to review one of their products, and I’ve been resisting, as I really don’t see the purpose of them at all. I finally relented a few weeks back and they sent one over to look at – and it’s interesting. They’re very well made, albeit a bit pricey, and I can see the novelty attraction,…
