DIY Pong.

DIY Pong Game. No, not an invitation to practice indiscriminate flatulence, but rather a fun opportunity to build your own TV table tennis game in the privacy of your own home. You need to solder stuff, so you may have to cut down on the Jack Daniels to quell the twitchies. You have been warned. $19.99.  Now however you can cobble together your very own Classic Video Table Tennis Game with a little determination and some basic soldering skillz. This…

Roll your own solar heater…2.

DIY Solar Heater Panel Mark 2. Cheaper ($5.00), hotter (170 degs F) and easier to build. That’s what we call progress. And it looks so beautiful, in a post-apocalyptic, art trasheau kinda way. Nice.  After our first attempt at a home built proof of concept solar thermal panel, we were a bit disappointed with the results. It took about 4 hours before the thing started work, and was a bit costly (at over 50 dollars) to make. I knew it…

Cheap n’ Easy Photo Frame.

The DIY Cheap n Easy Photo Frame. OK, so we’ll go with the cheap, but easy? Mmm…  Now, the screen can only take 7.5 volts of power. Much more than that, and it’ll fry. The adapter that comes with the viewer is labeled for 12 volts (but I was measuring 15 with my multimeter… all lies!) and so you’d think that the viewer needs 12 volts to run. Not so! I just so happened to test if it would run…

DIY Teddy Bear Remote.

The DIY Teddy Bear Remote. Er…can we just say that that’s the weirdest looking ‘teddy bear’ that we’ve ever seen. Anyhoo, so’s not to spoil the fun let’s just go along with it and enjoy. Yeah, why not eh?  The teddy bear remote sits nicely on your sofa or bed and can be used to control your iPod or computer. It’s a cute modification to an RF remote control and is surprisingly soft! The project is difficult to make and…

DIY Solar panelling.

The DIY Solar Panel Project.  Crude but effective way to heat water for your various purposes using nothing more than a simple design and some grass. Sorry plastic. Yes plastic. Not grass. Prepare for Peak Oil now!  The water in the panel heats up and moves up the little path you have made for it, in the process it gets very warm, so be careful…If you leave it in the sun it will start to thermo siphon pretty fast as…

DIY LCD Photo Frame.

The most marvellous Mike Haney of Popsci has produced a fascinating account of building a DIY LCD Photo Frame out of an old decrepit IBM laptop, some string and a copy of the free Slickr screensaver. Super delicious for just $80.00 and a packet of crisps, Mikey.  But the real star of this project is Slickr…a screensaver that displays a constantly updated slideshow of images from my account on Flickr.com, a free photo-sharing site. I can even set it to show…

DIY eyes.

DIY Ultrasonic Radar. True geeks don’t let their robots stumble around in the dark, they equip them with home made ultrasonic radar systems. No more bumping into chairs and grannies. And that goes for the robots too. Warning: not for the code cuttingly challenged.  The Devantech SFR04 Ultrasonic Range Finder indicates the distance to the closest object within range. Echo’s that arrive later are received and processed, but subsequently ignored. For a true radar all signals should be taken into account. So, time…
