Abilon. Yet another free RSS reader. Isn’t Abilon that lawless town in old John Wayne movies? Or is that…?  Abilon displays headlines from RSS (Rich Site Summary – Really Simple Syndication) Channels in an easy to read format. It is small (about 500 kb), fast, and free. Adding new channels is as simple as right-clicking and entering the address of the feed.

Plug and play.

The Kjaerhus Classic Series of VST plug-ins are free software effects available for anyone to download. Should work with most good music sequencers or other VST compatible progs, and save you a bundle on hardware. Nice one!  The goals were simple – make a series of VST plugins that works, feels, looks and most importantly sounds as good as a professional hardware unit. Also, keep it simple and easy to operate. In fact, anyone who knows their way around the…

The Word Backup Utility. Use this free Microsoft Word template to backup your computer. Yep you heard me, use Word as a file archiving tool. Colour me astonished! [From the very cool O’Reilly book, Word Hacks].  Use this coded Word template to backup your system. We here at MouseTrax use this system to backup our entire network, in an amazingly short time! Greg even uses this same code for enterprise network backups. Just include the directories you want backed up and provide a…

Malicious mellifluence.

Microsoft has released the Malicious Software Removal Tool which can be used from the website or downloaded. What a lovely, caring company.  The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 computers for and helps remove infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. Microsoft will release…

RagTime.

RagTime. Actually this looks to be an exceedingly well written piece of publishing/design software. Better still, the RagTime Solo version is free for personal non-commercial use. Download it now while the offer lasts. Apple and PC.  Five reasons why you need RagTime Solo:1. You don’t want to persuade your wordprocessor or spreadsheet program to do layout any longer.2. You want to break the barriers of common wordprocessors and spreadsheet programs and handle everything on one page: Texts, pictures, spreadsheets, charts…

Phat video.

The Turbine Video Encoder program is most excellent way of converting standard video clips to the Flash format in order to embed and play them easily on web sites. Best of all, there’s a free version to play with.  Here we see some rare footage of one of the Ferret’s closest relatives performing for an adoring polecat audience somewhere deep in the Swedish countryside. De-dupe.

Duper. Kind of useful freeware for locating duplicate files like digital photos methinks.  Duper scans directories for identical files, allows you to easily locate and delete duplicates wasting hard disk space. The latest version is 20041011 (revision 296). The philosophy behind Duper is to be fast, free and small…Duper first scans all file sizes. If any two file sizes are identical, an MD5 sum is computed for each file and then used to determine if they are identical. After scanning, it…
