The Gadget Manifesto Revisited – plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose?

Seventeen long years ago I wrote a piece here called The Gadget Manifesto. It was a rant borne out of frustration with the relentless increase in junk technology. The problem was basically too much Far Eastern manufacturing capacity chasing too few consumers. Result…price plummeting, quality plummeting, consumers suffering. I’m revisiting this subject only because it looks like we’re clearly not going to reverse course any time soon. Nearly 2 decades on, we’re still buying this junk, and throwing it away…

Gordon Moore RIP – Goodbye Mr Chips

Dr Gordon Moore, one of the three co-founders of Intel Corporation has passed away in Hawaii at the age of 94.  I had the privilege of interviewing him in London in March 1997, and he came across as a genuinely humble man, typical of the genuine ‘boffin’ type of the time. The thing I remember mostly from the interview was his professed love for antiques. Apparently he and his wife, Betty, spent a lot of their free time browsing for…

TV White Spaces – otters, meerkats and the future technology behind a real internet of things

The world needs more wireless. There are just too many applications and products chasing too little spectrum space. And the biggest challenges are yet to come, as more and more machines start to ‘talk’ directly to each other as part of their functions. Which is why various countries have been looking at ways to provide more bandwidth for these services. The most promising is TV White Space, the unused portion of the TV spectrum which used to be occupied by…

Liftshare – could this new app revolutionize the daily commute and destroy Uber? [Freeware]

With little fanfare a new app has just been released in the UK which could signal a profound change in the way many of us travel each day, pointing to a new paradigm for daily commuting. The new Liftshare app (Android, with iPhone to follow shortly) works by linking together those who need a ride with those who are offering a seat in their car. It’s not a new idea, but what’s different with Liftshare is the fact that there…

TomTom GPS App For Android FAIL – offline navigation app that is supposed to work offline does not: DO NOT BUY THIS APP

[Update Sept 2015: The company has now introduced a new subscription based product called TomTom Go to replace the old smartphone software. We haven’t tested it at length yet, or out in the wilderness with no connection, but the company claims the app no longer needs a connection to work offline at all times. We sincerely hope so!] TomTom, one of the biggest GPS navigation software and hardware suppliers in the world, has a big problem. And it’s one they’re…

The Plain Man’s Guide to What The Massive Shellshock Bug Means For You

[image] The big tech news of the moment, and probably of the year or decade, is the revelation about a massive security hole in something called Bash, which is an arcane bit of geek code which is installed on many of the computers which power and host the Internet (and also Apple Mac computers). Here’s our plain man’s guide to what it means for you. 1. Over 51% of all web servers (i.e. websites) are running on the Linux operating…

Candy and the very real problems of 3D printer crowdfunding

Every day we receive a bunch of solicitations to support crowdfunding projects from various places, and while we absolutely love the whole idea of public/fan sponsored products, there are areas where things need to settle down a little and get real. One such example is 3D printers, a hot new segment where idealistic dreams are often clouding better judgment and financial realities.

The City of London Police now own the Internet

Soo, this is interesting. The City of London police, a force which looks after a mere 1 mile patch in the centre of London, has now taken upon itself to run the Internet. According to this BBC report, the police force, which is best known for wearing quaint helmets and having a love of horses, has started inserting warning banners on websites it thinks are infringing copyright.

Bloggers in France can now be fined for bad reviews? Vraimant?

We seriously need to do some compulsory education of the legal profession around the world, judging by this unbelievable court judgment in France. A French judge, who is unfortunately not named, has ruled that a negative review of a restaurant called Il Giardino in Cap-Ferret, which had the title “the place to avoid in Cap-Ferret: Il Giardino”, was overly critical and should be toned down. The judge also fined the writer. Incredible.

Tabophilia – could this dangerous obsession wreck the Internet?

Tab.o.philia. Noun. 1. Obsessive compulsion to keep multiple tabs, sometimes up to 90 or more, open on a computer web browser. 2. A love of cycling through tab data. AKA Click-happy syndrome. ————————————– As of the time of writing this author has around 71 tabs currently open in his web browser. I have no idea why I do this, but according to researchers subconsciously it may be something to do with a fear of losing track of information. Neural psychologists…

MakeSpace – watch out eBay and Craigslist, cloud closets are coming to get you!

You can always tell when a new service is being hyped up as a billion dollar possibility, because you start seeing a lot of fancy comparisons. Like ‘the reverse Amazon‘ or ‘the Uber for x‘. This is VC short speak for ‘we’ve dumped a ton of money into this venture because we believe it’s going to be incredibly disruptive and change the world. Maybe.’ The PR trick is to associate the new venture with a massive veteran success story, as…
