Kuba-Kickz to the rescue!

If you like to run at night, then there’s a good chance you stick to a designated path. There can be people lurking about at the wee hours with not-so-good intentions, and not everyone has a black belt. Pepper spray and whistles can help, but the time it takes to get those out of your pocket may be too long.

SFTP Net Drive turns your web hosting server into an awesome external hard drive for safe secure file storage [Freeware]

Storing files safely is one of those things we seldom think about until we’re faced with a chronic shortage of disk space on our personal computer. It’s usually home videos or a bunch of vacation snaps which trigger the panic, by which time we end up scrabbling around for spare hard drives or signing up for online storage services. The problem with online services like Google Drive is the fact that they all come with restrictions and limits, which can…

Tackk – the easiest web noticeboard in the known universe?

The web is changing all right, and one way you can tell is by looking at the new tools coming down the pipe. Instead of heavy clunky web design programs and services, we’re seeing a definite rise in the number of quick and easy tools to create online content. At one end you’ve got the elegant and iconic Pinterest, and at the other you have tools like Tumblr. But that still leaves a gap to fill.

How Much CO2? – don’t read this if you live near a beach

Every time we do a web search we indirectly create 0.2g of CO2, sending an email equals 4g, make a 1 min cell phone call and we’re talking 57g. And so on and so forth… Ever wanted to know just how much you’re contributing to the global warming everyone’s talking about? Nope, we’re not that enthusiastic either, but it’s fascinating info. Anyway, just for posterity here it is, all set out in an easy to use, interactive chart called How…

Lookout Signal Flare locates your missing phone, even after a dead battery [Freeware]

There’s lots of ways to lose your phone, and a growing number of ways to find it again. Locator apps are thick on the ground, of which one of our favorites is the open source Prey app. But one thing these programs can’t do is locate your phone if it’s got a battery which is out of juice…and of course lost, as opposed to stolen, handsets quickly run out of power.

Global Village Construction Set – keeping civilization alive via free open source blueprints

Long time readers will know how passionate we are here about the open source movement in all its forms. For example, a couple of years ago we featured 21 of the Coolest Open Source Hardware Projects in the world, which included a great open source tractor for agricultural and industrial use. Well time moves on, and it seems the movement is growing stronger by the day. That little tractor has literally become a whole ecosystem designed to provide the building…

Animatone Over-Ear Headphones keeps kids in check

Kids don’t really understand limitations. Jumping off of things that are way too high, trying to pet every animal they see, and turning up the volume on a pair of headphones so loud that they can’t hear their own thoughts. It’s up to the parent to keep them reigned in as best they can, and it’s always comforting to see that there are companies out there that want to help you.

Tunewear AccordFolio Case is the perfect way to carry around all your smartphone bits and pieces

With great power comes great responsibility, and nowhere is this more apparent than with smartphones. Sure they’re great and everything, but have you noticed how much other stuff they need in order to work optimally? Card readers, extra batteries, memory cards, charging cables…the list goes on. And where exactly are we supposed to store all these bits, our already full pockets? There must be a better way.

Bear Grylls Survival Kit: because you just never know

Isn’t it great how an emergency always gives you warning before it happens? Yep, life is pretty swell about that, since you’re always ready for situations before they occur. Now that we’ve all had a good laugh about how that never happens, we can move on to finding ways to be prepared for life’s little surprises.

Telepen is a pen that you will be devastated to lose

While we all have a penchant for using our phones as a notepad, address book, calculator, etc., we just can’t help but write things out every now and then. There are days that you want to scribble out a to-do list, and be able to cross things off (it’s a wonderful feeling, isn’t it?). The only issue with this is that you’ll need to have a writing implement handy, and keeping track of a pen all day seems a bit…

Travel Smart Mini Iron makes sure you’re dressed to impress

Any  traveling businessperson needs to make sure that their exterior doesn’t reflect the jet-lagged and overworked interior that they’re dealing with on a regular basis. One way to do that is keeping up with hygiene, and the other is to have clean, crisp clothing. Ironing a shirt can make you appear as though you’re ready to take on the day, but not every hotel has all the tools you need to make this happen. No one wants to waltz into…

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter keeps you hydrated and happy

If you want to trek into the wilderness with nothing more than a pack on your back, then you need to have the right supplies. Carrying too much with you will make things very unpleasant very quickly, and one of the main things that will weigh you down is water. You definitely need it to live, but you can’t exactly carry a week’s worth in addition to what’s already in your bag. Your only option is to drink water found…

Nexto Di Digital Photo Storage – keep those memories safe and sound

How much are your photos worth to you? A lot? Do you have them backed up somewhere safely, or are they still sitting on memory cards or your computer hard disk waiting for a catastrophe to wipe them out forever? Hey we’re not exaggerating here, it’s not a question of if, but when, because all storage media fails at one time or another. Remember when they lied and told us that CDs would last forever? Hah!

WordPress Music – free websites for musicians? Rock on, baby…

Everybody loves music, right? You’ve probably got at least one musician in your collection of friends and family, y’know the one with the slightly greasy hair, vacant expression and a damaged social engagement meter. All we know is that without them the world would be a distinctly poorer place all round, and it’s nice to see that the WordPress developers agree.
