FriendShopper – because shopping online is boring by yourself

FriendShopper allows you to share and shop with your friends while online. You can search for stores via the FriendShopper website and add them to your list and you can add and save items via the bookmarklet as you surf. You can add items to your FriendShopper folder using the browser bookmarklet, chat to your friends while you surf and send items to them for perusing whether they’re on-or-offline. I was up and running in less than 20 seconds, registration…

The Public School – super cool DIY online school

The Public School is the kind of online service which really makes me sit up and take notice. The idea is that anyone can suggest or teach a class and once there are enough interested pupils the class starts. Super cool. At the moment pupils attend a physical location (in LA) to learn, but why couldn’t the idea be extended to online education, via Skype or some other remote communication technology? I just love the idea of crowdsourced education, delivering…

Open Meetings – open source conferencing software

Open Meetings is a free open source program which comes with all the stuff you need for maintaining your own web conferencing system. The interface is rather Teutonically Spartan [huh…? – Ed] but it looks as though the software will get the job done. If you don’t have friends you’re going to find it tough to test out, but the demo is worth a look anyway. You can run conferences with up to 16 people with audio and video, or an…

Meeting Ticker – track the chat and save cash

Next time you have a meeting in your company, take in your laptop, fire up Meeting Ticker and watch your colleagues gaze uneasily at the screen as the cost of their chat mounts up in glorious Technicolor in front of their eyes. Suddenly those little quibbles about the position of the full stop don’t seem so important, eh? Awesome little efficiency tool. Tags: meeting+ticker, online+application

AirBnB – crowdsource your vacation or business lodging rental

AirBnB is a new online service which offers direct links to people and organisations willing to rent out their premises for short term stays. So it’s kind of like a hotel booking service, but without the hotels. Rentals vary from own room in a private house to a full rental of a luxury villa, and the prices as you would expect compete nicely with hotel rates.  Nice folks, folks like you, list their guest rooms, futons, and even couches on…

POW – Opera Unite for Firefox users

POW (Plain Old Webserver) is a free downloadable utility and add-on for Firefox combo that turns your browser into a web server, a la Opera Unite. Of course it’s nowhere near as slick, polished and functional as the Opera product, but with a bit of manual tweaking you can get something up and running pretty fast. All it really needs is some determined open source development love and I can see this becoming a righteous competitor for the Unite product, which…

TorrentTwitter – share your favourite Torrent files

TorrentTwitter. Share your favourite torrents with friends and family via Twitter posts. What else is there to say, other than the fact that you can also create groups of people to share interests? There’s absolutely no stopping this technology stuff, is there?  TorrentTwitter is a micro-blogging service that allows people to share their favorite torrents with their friends, families and fans. More cool torrents that they share, more popular they become. Users post short (140 character) notices which are broadcast to people that…

Opera Unite – super cool tech turns the web browser into a web server

I’ve been playing around with the new Opera Unite technology, and it is indeed very cool. Not so much because it’s new – the features and ideas behind it have been around in different forms for years – but because it brings these services together under one roof and makes them ultra simple for web newcomers and those who just want fire and forget simplicity in their lives. The Opera people have basically turned their web browser into a system which can share…

Futz.me is a new online service which lets you send stuff to your email address or mobile phone (US only) via a URL command in your browser address bar. Copes with images, links, text and to-do notes etc. So instead of firing up your email client to send a photo to your cell, just type in futz.me/username and then the web address of the pic. PulpTunes is a free open source program which allows you to stream your iTunes library across the Internet from any browser. You can either install it to a remote server or onto your own computer, which seems nicely flexible. It works on Mac, Windows and Linux and supports MP3 and AAC files.
