Rondee – free phone conferencing done with much coolness

Rondee is a very cool new telephone conferencing service which offers a super simple interface and instant conference calls between multiple users. There’s a nice slick scheduling feature which automatically emails the attendees with conference timings, as well as a simple user ID system. It’s unfortunately US only at the moment, but still a great example of the genre.    Rondee was started because existing teleconferencing systems either charge high fees or aren’t easy to use # Besides being free, Rondee…

Summize – delivering public opinion on products for shoppers

Summize is an interesting new site which trawls the web sucking up reviews, opinions and reports on products which are then delivered as a simple set of icons and gradings. The aim is to remove the chore of hunting for product reviews and give a fast snapshot of public opinion on a product or service. The summaries are based on a simple colour coded chart icon which shows at a glance how users rated a product on sites like Amazon,…

Qik – stream videos direct from your mobile phone to the web

Qik. Fascinating new service which lets you stream video directly from your mobile phone to the Web. You download a small software applet onto your handset and from then on you’re a one-person, roaming live camcorder, and better still all streams are recorded to your own personal archive on the site. Neat concept and an inevitable result of the improvement in mobile data bandwidth. Currently very much in private beta, and only supports a small set of Nokia phones. Oh and…

Sleep FM – the first social network powered alarm clock

Sleep FM. A new beta service which offers a twist on the old online alarm clock theme. Instead of relying on a basic alarm, you can set the service so that your friends and family can wake you up every morning with a custom voice or music audio track. You leave the computer on over night and the next morning you’re woken up by the sound of your daughter saying ‘Daddy I love you…’ or your best mates screaming obscenities from the speaker. It sounds a…

World TV – superb idea brings together video content and user creativity

World TV. Register and you can set up your own television channel, comprised of whatever video clips you want from around the web’s main video sites like YouTube, Metacafe, iFilm, AOL and the like. I have to say I love the idea and the implementation. The concept of pulling in videos onto your own space (you get a simple channel URL as part of the sign up) and wrapping it all in a super friendly skin is great. Sure it’s not revolutionary,…

How Do I? – a perfectly formed instructional video search service

How Do I? is a fabulously simple idea done beautifully. Put in a search term for something you want to learn about (e.g. how do I make scrambled eggs?) and the site will do a Google search of all the relevant video sites for instructional material on your request. It’s lovely, and in fact I dig it so much I’ve added it to the bottom of my sidebar over on the right. I can see myself using this in future, when…

Anywhere FM – the web browser as your iPod, upload and enjoy anywhere

AnywhereFM is a new music player and upload service which lets you listen to your music anywhere you can log on to the Web. It comes with a neat file upload utility which offers batch folder or playlist uploads, and ticks the box on a bunch of trendy ‘social’ features like Friend Radio and the mandatory community that mark it out as a proper Web 2.0 type thang. Yeah it’s not revolutionary, but it’s got a bit of style going for it….

Omgili Product Reviews – suddenly product reviews get people powered

The new Omgili Product Reviews service searches the web for product reviews and user opinions from catalogue pages such as Amazon reviews, bulletin boards, forums and other conversation sources. We covered Omgili fleetingly but favourably back in August last year, so it’s good to see this web forum search engine roll out something so cool. The good points include the excellent ratings graphic (miserable to excellent) which gives a super fast overview of a product’s review position. This really makes it easy to…

Google Sites – new Google collaboration tool promises amazing feature set

So there’s a new Google application due next year called Google Sites, which will be an extended amalgam of the Google Pages web site creator and JotSpot, the wiki app that Google bought a while back. This is interesting from a lot of angles, not least of which is the fact that it potentially introduces real Web 2.0 user generated functionality to business applications properly for the first time ever. One thing I will add is that JotSpot was the only…

Electric Pig – new tech review portal snorts into life

Electric Pig is a brand spanking – Caution Wet Paint – new consumer tech review portal. Think of it as a search engine for gadget info and reviews. The site contains user reviews, hand picked expert reviews (rather than just trawling the web) and a pretty neat Auto Compare button which gives you a super fast comparison between similar products. There’s lots of Web 2.0 candy, the team comes from the very famous T3 magazine and the search function is impressively fast.  What’s ElectricPig? It’s the…

Mixx – yet another web link service joins the pack…hmm….

Mixx. A new kind of Digg, and supposedly better. I have to say that I think most community link sites have a built-in problem because they scale badly. Not because of performance, but simply because of the angry herd they seem to attract once they reach huge membership levels. The prime example is Digg, which is, to my mind, has become a pretty poor resource recently. My preferred services (in no particular order): StumbleUpon. Superb idea, done elegantly. No superfluous nonsense, just great web…

SciVee – peer reviewed science gets a web 2.0 video makeover

SciVee is a multimedia based science web journal, which is trying to deliver more value for researchers than simply submitting a dry paper to a peer reviewed publication. Simply put, it’s a place where science geeks can hang out and shoot the breeze (in a serious and earnest manner of course). OK, so it’s a little bit of a marginal application, unless you’re directly involved in science, research and the like, but it’s still a very interesting example of how net technology is likely…

Satisfaction – web 2.0 community help site slides quietly out of private beta

On the face of it, Satisfaction is just another Web 2.0 community web site, this time focusing on consumer help. Dig a little deeper though, and you’ll find some very important differences. First off, the design makes it very easy to find answers fast. You want help with your digital camera, simply enter in the search terms and the dynamic Ajax search will start giving you results immediately. No waiting around for a page refresh of results. It’s slick and…
