When you think about it, the phrase ‘drag up a chair’ kind of sums up our relationship with these common seating tools. We put up with having to drag them around the place, when in reality it would be much better if we could just wear them, wouldn’t it? Well hey, now there’s a new Swiss invention which may just let that happen.

The Chairless Chair is a lightweight exo-rig which you strap on, and which can then be used to support the wearer in a seated position whenever they switch it on. According to this CNN report, the idea was born out of the frustration one of the developers felt when working on a UK production line with no seating. It was painful. The result was the idea that people could actually wear their own chairs, and still walk around as normal.

The device can run for 24 hours on a single 6V battery, and in addition to resting your leg muscles it also helps with overall posture, since the back is kept straight while the seated position is maintained. The aluminum and carbon fiber frame product has already garnered some serious interest from the motor industry, with BMW and Audi both starting trials later this year.

Apparently the developers have plans to expand the product out from industrial use to consumer models, so who knows, one day we may all be carrying around our own invisible chairs, which could really change the nature of the living room furniture business.
