Could imagine living without the sense of touch? No more heat sensing through your fingertips, or feeling wet and dry. No more of that input at all from your body. For hundreds of thousands of people or more, this is a reality due to injury but scientists have found a way restore the sense with a computer chip.
The loss of the sense of touch can be caused by spinal cord injuries (SCI). Scientists implanted a chip in a SCI patient and were able to restore a sort of touch to the man. With the help of the chip and assorted computer equipment, he was able to complete simple, touch focused tasks.
This is still very much in its infancy but if taken further it could open up new doors and pathways for people who have lost this sense due to this type of injury. Check out the video below to see it in action.
