There’s another danger caused by the climate crisis that may be all but invisible to many. As things become more dire in communities already feeling the pressure from the crisis, an increase in gender based violence putting many women and girls in developing nations in danger.
Although in many developed countries the effects of the climate crisis are still very mild, for many parts of the world, people are already dealing with scarcity and displacement due to the higher temperatures and rising water levels or even lack of water. This causes extra stress for these people which, unfortunately, manifests as gender based violence.
What this means is that plans for mitigating this and helping the people at risk must be part of climate action. As the two issues are linked, climate change isn’t the sole cause for such violence but a contributing factor, it’s important to plan to support and protect those who are affected by it.
