The climate crisis puts the world’s biodiversity in danger. As it gets warmer and weather gets more extreme, many plants and animals will not be able to survive these changes. Anywhere from 50-95% of species will become extinct in the next 50 years. That’s a lot.
The study was conducted by looking at past extinction records and climate variables for a number of sites to help predict what will happen in the future. Although the scientists revealed that some species will be able to migrate in order to continue to thrive, depending on how quickly the effects of the climate crises come to pass, they may not have time to do so.
These grave numbers just go to show how serious the climate crisis is. We think about it in terms of how humans would handle it but the fact is, we share this planet with a lot of other life forms and they will have to to weather the changes too.
