Copenhagen Wheel – You’ve heard about it; now experience it

Copenhagen Wheel

Way back in the ancient times of 2010, we mentioned this sweet little dream that was in the thoughts of a few people at MIT. Those industrious wizards of gadgety things have worked their magic, transforming their dream into reality.

For a little while, it seemed like the Copenhagen Wheel might have been a fantasy left unfulfilled. Could a gadget really be created that would turn a regular bicycle into a motorized bike? A lengthy silence seemed to indicate the concept wasn’t solid enough for commercial application, but the wheel is finally back in the spotlight.

The interesting thing about this motor is that your muscle power – and not gears or throttles – determines how much power to exert. If a rider pedals harder when going up a hill, the wheel will push with increasing power. Ease up on the pedaling and the power level drops back down. This is done to preserve the normal biking experience while enabling riders to bike faster, farther, and easier. It’s not really about adding power, but more about using the already-existing power to the best of its ability.

Just like almost everything else under the sun these days, there’s also an app that can be used, although it’s not needed to just the wheel for what it’s designed for. With the complementary mobile app, you can lock or unlock the wheel, choose a customized ride, and track personal usage statistics such as time, distance, calories burned, elevation climbed, and more.

The Copenhagen Wheel will start rolling out (heh) Spring 2014 but it can be pre-ordered now. Choose between the $699 Copenhagen Wheel limited edition (only available for the first 1000 buyers) or the $799 $699 Copenhagen Wheel developers edition.
