CopyGator – keep an eye on your web content for plagiarism

Copygator

CopyGator is a cool new service which finds if anyone is replubishing your content anywhere else on the Web without your permission. In this day and age, it’s common for people to…ahem…’repurpose’ your prose and use it to make money with adverts. I’ve just found a couple of sites already that are doing that with Ferret content.

Just enter in your URL and the service will sniff out the users of your RSS feed, and bingo you can hire hugely expensive lawyers to drive round and stamp all over their hard drives. Take that, pirate! A-haaaarrr….

I particularly like the little CopyGator button that webmasters can stick on their site which turns red if it finds any stolen content. Nice touch in the fight against terror, guys. Luckily I steal all my content from Mrs Miggins next door, and she doesn’t have a proper set of teeth, let alone an RSS feed.

This is a free service designed to monitor your RSS feed and find where your content has been republished in the blogosphere. We automatically notify you when a new post of yours is copied to another feed, we also build an overview page you can view to see how/when/where your content is being duplicated, quoted or plagiarized.

  • Sad to say that, in my own testing of the service, it was an almost complete failure. It's range of detection is too narrow and its matching seems flawed. Still, it brings some great ideas to the table…
