Could edible containers be in our future?

First there was Le Whif, an inhalable chocolate, then Aeroshot, an aerosol caffeine boost. These products creator – Dr. David Edwards from Harvard University’s Wyss Institute – has come up with a new product idea – portable, edible food containers!

This fascinating food packaging system would be made up of what he terms WikiCells, non-plastic material made of natural food membrane that is held together by electrostatic forces would contain a liquid, emulsion, foam, or solid food substance. WikiCells membranes are significantly resistant to water, and adjoined shells could conceivably take the form of a biodegradable bottle or other liquid container over long periods of time.

This food project and technology currently being worked on at the commercial incubator of ArtScience Labs. So far, the research team has created an orange-flavored membrane for storing orange juice, a tomato-flavored gazpacho container and a grape flavored package for wine. They hope to create an actual bottle of this membrane and envision a commercially-available WikiCell machine that would dispense these edible membrane-covered food and drinks.
