Quick question, can something still be called a train if it doesn’t run on rails? CRRC Zhuzhou thinks so which is why their next step in transportation is a smart train that has tires and runs right on the street.
This new Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) is 30 meters long and can run up to 70 KMH. It can carry up to 500 passengers at once so I guess it’s probably not quite a bus even though mass transit options that runs on wheels are usually defined as “bus”.
The hope is that this bad boy will use sensors to stay abreast of its surrounding area (thus keeping it from running over pedestrians or crushing people in its doors). It runs on electricity and should eventually be able to use data to plan more efficient routes. The company hopes that this solution will be able to keep up with population growth and continue to offer safe, cost efficient public transportation.
