DeskHop – share your screen with a friend on Facebook anytime

There are many reasons why you might need to share your computer screen with someone else, and they don’t all involve photos of furry kittens. For one thing, it’s a great way to fix problems, without having to visit someone’s home or office. For another, it can be really helpful if you’re trying to work on something with a remote colleague and time is getting short.

Until now, though, the whole process has been a little bit too complex for the average user, although there are lots of services around which try to make it as painless as possible. Now there’s a new option available and it’s very interesting indeed.

DeskHop is a new service from the RealVNC people, and what makes it special is the fact that it works from inside Facebook. That’s right, if you have a Facebook account, you can use this little app to connect to friends, family or colleagues and share screens at the touch of a button.

The process is as easy as 123. First choose your friend in Facebook (they need to be online of course), then select the screen to be shared (either of you can share their own computer screen) and then download and run the small app code which does all the clever sharing bit. That’s it.

The sessions are totally private, with nothing being stored of viewed by the RealVNC servers. Once the session is over, both app programs self-destruct and there’s no record kept of anything that’s happened. Apart from the NSA and GCHQ of course, who will be storing everything under a mountain in Colorado.

You can’t transmit sound or files though, which is a bit of a limitation, which we assume is something to do with the Facebook connection, but there are ways around that, especially if you run a simultaneous IM session. We’re not sure who the product is aimed at, but we suspect it’s for technophobes who feel more comfortable inside Facebook than they do out on those dangerous ‘Internets’. Anyway, worth a look.
