Dryve – lovely lightweight rain cover for bicycles makes your ride weather proof [Updated]

The one thing we don’t enjoy on a bicycle is bad weather. Cold wind, rain, snow, all that nasty stuff that car drivers can avoid. Sure you can wrap up well, and make sure you’re protected, but then you risk getting all hot and sticky, which is again not great. But now an enterprising team from Switzerland has come up with something very clever indeed.

The Dryve is a rain and weatherproof lightweight cover which you clip on to your bicycle to protect you when things get inclement. The cover weighs just 1050g and is made from plastic, with a clear sheet embedded in the front to make it easy to see through during downpours or snow showers.

We’re not really sure how well the visibility holds up in very cold weather (there doesn’t seem to be much of a view in the image above) but maybe that’s something which is still being worked on. We’re thinking a nice hydrophobic spray should help with this?

The product is not on the market yet, but it’s already won a Swiss invention award, so hopefully it will be out soon. It’s not a million miles away from the BMW C1 scooter concept, only adapted for generic bicycles, and our only question is why’s it taken so long for this to happen. We’ll definitely get one when they’re out and stick a nice comfy heater unit in there somewhere. Toasty. The Dryve is due out summer 2015 for a recommended retail price of around €126 (£99).

  • Weird… but I could have sworn I saw this very thing a few years ago, possibly on this very site. Maybe I’m thinking about this:

Still, I’m almost certain it was the product above I saw. I remember thinking that it did little to prevent getting soaked from the sides and that an umbrella hat (and rain coat) was probably more effective.

    • Oh gosh, that’s amazing. I don’t think it was us covered it though (heh). The thing about the lack of sides is apparently the wind keeps the water away. At least that’s what the folk at Renault say about their Twizzy. :)
