e-Car Club – the first electric car rental company opens its doors

ecarclub2

Here’s a sign of the times. E-Car Club is the first electric car club to open up, offering hourly or daily hire of any of a small range of electric cars. The first locations are all based around London in the UK, and so far there’s not many to choose from, but the company has big plans.

The latest site is the University of Hertfordshire which is putting a number of electric cars, two Renault Zoes and a Renault Fluence on campus for student and staff use. The cars cost from around £5.50 an hour to hire, and what’s interesting is 19 year olds are eligible, which is definitely not the case with most standard car hire companies, which mandate 21 as the minimum age.

The idea behind the EV club seems sound, since many hire tasks only need a few miles, so the 80 mile range should be more than adequate for those essential little jobs. And if it saves people from having to own their own car, then it’s got to be good for the environment too, right?

The company also rents out electric vans, which offer more load capacity and could be useful for students wanting to pick up furniture for their digs from IKEA or something like that. Of course as with all such startups, the main issue will be availability, and it will obviously take time for more locations to come on stream. For now we wish them well in this brave endeavor.
