Eat Just chicken – world’s first lab cultured meat gets go ahead in Singapore

So the race is on to wean us all off meat and turn us into happy little plant eaters. Leading the charge is Beyond Meat (disclosure: recently tried their Beyond Burger and it is astonishingly good), closely followed by a bunch of alternatives. Among the most interesting is California based Eat Just, which recently announced that it’s lab cultured chicken had won approval for commercial use in Singapore. Why Singapore? We’re not sure. Anyway the bottom line is that our days of eating massive amounts of animal products is probably slowly drawing to a close.

The company is already known for its range of egg substitute products made out of the humble mung bean, but this latest move is clearly a whole new ball game. Unlike Beyond Meat, the alternative here is made by taking cells from an animal and growing them in a bioreactor to create a kind of cloned meat. They liken it to brewing beer, we’re not so sure that consumers are going to take to the idea of laboratory grown food. Anyway, taste and time will tell. The one thing that’s important here is how effective these meat alternatives are in reducing our carbon emissions, and plant or lab it seems to be all good news.
