ecoATM – Automated Recycling Stations

Image

The ecoATM is called an eCycling Station, basically you drop in your nearly out-of-date appliance (phone, GPS, MP3 player etc) and the ecoATM assigns it a value and pays you in the form of an in-store redemption, gift card or charitable donation. The old device is then either stored to be resold or binned to be recycled, meanwhile you’ve got a fistful of credit to spend on new toys.

The ecoATMs are designed to go into stores and cost nothing for the retailer to install, as they attract customers and pay in store credit. Everybody wins, except the gadget which is stuck in a box in the dark awaiting recycling. After a successful trial in Nebraska the first ecoATM has been rolled out in San Diego with more to come as the idea takes hold.

The ecoATM – Easy as 1, 2, 3: Step 1) Insert portable CE device or handset / Step 2) Used device automatically valued / Step 3) Portables automatically binned inside. User receives trade-up coupon, gift card, and/or charitable contribution.
