Ekahau makes an asset tracking system that uses enterprise or VoIP level wifi routers to keep track of people or equipment. Everything you want tracked needs to be tagged with a wifi tag but there’s a tag for almost every application, including hospital patients, assets or equipment, remote temperature probes or even employees that work in dangerous or hazardous areas. They even have a wifi pager.
The system is accurate enough to tell whether a tagged object has moved within a room, has changed rooms, changed floors or even changed buildings. It’s all tied together using the Ekahau Positioning Engine, a SkyNet-like system that can keep track of up to 10,000 tagged objects per server. Click through to Ekahau’s website and get all the details. It looks like a great idea.

Ekahau RTLS is the only Wi-Fi-based location tracking solution that can operate over any brand or generation of Wi-Fi network while offering sub room-, room-, floor- and building-level accuracy. As a Wi-Fi standards-based software solution, Ekahau RTLS requires no readers, new cabling, choke-points or exciters. The system uses patented software-based algorithms to compute the location of tracked objects and can easily scale to support tens of thousands of tags on a single server. With Ekahau, your RTLS solution can be up and running in a matter of days or a few weeks, not months.
