EMerge have proposed a DC distribution that not only makes the building more efficient, but also more flexible. If you need to move a light, just unclip it and move it. DC power makes systems like LED lighting simpler too as the lights wouldn’t need an AC to DC converter. Google were pushing for something similar a couple of years ago but this seems to be far more reaching and with a bunch of leading companies in on it, it should do well.
The EMerge Alliance was established to promote the rapid adoption of safe, low-voltage DC power distribution and use in commercial building interiors. EMerge is focused on developing a global standard that integrates interior infrastructures, power, controls and a wide variety of peripheral devices, such as lighting, in a common platform.
