Encrypt your Dropbox files using TrueCrypt

As we pointed out yesterday, one of the most important things you can do on your computer is to run regular backups. The guide we linked to was great for the novice wanting to learn the ins and outs of backups. However, if you’re wanting to do something a little more advanced, like encrypting your files before syncing them with a cloud-hosted backup service, then we know just the thing.

Dropbox is one of my favorite online backup solutions, mostly because it has a variety of functions. I tend to use it to also share files with people remotely. Well, if you have very sensitive files, you might consider using an extra layer of encryption, should the worst happen and your files be compromised on their server. The guys over at Lifehacker have put together a great guide for using TrueCrypt to encrypt the files stored on Dropbox. Sure, it’s a little extra work, but for some sensitive files, one can’t be too careful.
