Fetch – grab and share just the text from any website or article in an instant via email

If you’re like me, you’re always finding cool stuff online which you want to send to friends and family. We use a neat Firefox addon to send web links instantly via Gmail but the problem is it just sends the link, so the recipient has to click through to view the content. Which is fine if they have an internet connection at the time, but not so good if they are out and about and don’t have access for whatever reason.

Which is why Fetch is so cool. This small, simple app lets you extract the text from a website and send it to the recipient via email, so they can read the actual core of the piece without having to access their browser at all. And because the messages also contains a link to the original, they can click through when they get home, or if they want to see the images or videos immediately. Very clever.

We tried it with one of our articles and it worked flawlessly, and very quickly. All you have to do is send an email to [email protected] with the link embedded and wait. Within seconds we received the text of a Ferret post, stripped of images and video embeds of course, but with all the important information right there in the text. Excellent.

The whole thing is very clever, and because it’s hosted via Heroku, we’re assuming it will be able to ramp up with demand, although by that time we expect there will be a price to pay for premium use of the app. For now it’s completely free.
