Fill the Bogs – filling peat bogs can help cut carbon emissions

Carbon sinks are a great way to help offset emissions. One of the biggest that the UK has areas that are just waiting to sink that carbon but they need a little TLC. Bringing back wet pet bogs can help reduce carbon but it’s really expensive.

Peat bogs have been ravished by farming leaving them dry and devoid of natural vegetation. By letting them fill back in and revitalizing their natural growth, they will begin to act as a carbon sink for the emissions that produced in other ways. As an aside, being dry causes the peat to release CO2 so filling it back in will at least stop that.

It’s very expensive to do so though costing upwards of £22 billion. Which is. . . a lot. But it can save much more in the form of captured emissions as well as ecological gains that can’t be measured as easily. The jury’s still out on whether or not the government will fill the bogs but it’s a promising plan that fights emissions and restores the earth.
