First Light – the Steampunk Lamp with No Electricity Required

First Light Standing

Lots of folk like the look of steampunk gear, and add vintage touches featuring cogs and gears to their homes at the drop of a hat, but First Light takes it the next level by being an actual clockwork, wind up lamp. This lamp may not be right for every home but it sure is a discussion piece.

At first glance it doesn’t really look like a lamp at all. It looks more like some modern art piece more than a functional household product. But like all good design, beauty and function go hand in hand.

For starters the lamp has no plugs or wires. Instead, it relies on weight to move the cog wheels, which in turn creates the power that runs the lamp. Like an old fashioned clock. But, also like an analogue time piece, you’ve got to wind it up when it runs down. There’s something almost magical about seeing how all the pieces work together to produce light. Bonus, if the power goes out you can still read your Kindle on a stormy night. No price listed, if interested you’ll have to contact the designers directly.
