Free Games Corner – Mysostis, Mysterious Island 49 & Matryoshka

Free Games Corner- Mysterious Island 49This week in free games corner we ask “but is it art?” whilst we point & click our way through some puzzles and problems, because whilst we’re just in it for the cheap thrill of a free web game or three, some of the people who make these things actually know what they are doing and do a very nice job of lovingly crafting something for our eyeballs and eardrums to feast upon. Bless ’em.

Myosotis Chapter 1 takes a noir approach, well noir et blanc to be more accurate, to it’s highly stylized graphics and atmospheric soundtrack as you play Rick, PI, searching for your long lost love in a mysterious hotel. Will you simply find her? Or will a secret doorway reveal itself and start you upon a merry dance through puzzles and brain teasers? Well hopefully that’s pretty obvious (check the bedside lamp), slightly less obvious is what a Mysostis is, no it’s not a nasty disease rabbits get, it’s actually another name for a forget-me-not. Ahhhh sweet…. do you see what they did there?

If an artistic style could be called the opposite of noir, then that’s the style of The Mysterious Island 49. Doodles meet color meet confusion. But it’s a beautiful and engaging confusion, with many clues & objects, that will help you escape the island you find yourself stranded upon, hiding in the doodles around you. And if you get too bamboozled, try using your [TAB] key. It’s an old trick for finding hidden objects in flash games, that mostly developers disable these days, but here it remains, which can be rather handy at times.

Lastly we come to Matryoshka a Japanese game featuring those Russian Dolls (a.k.a Matryoshka Dolls, hence the name), which I don’t think could be called art, per se, although it’s certainly slickly presented, but the general consensus is that this is a fine new example of the “escape the room” genre of the point & click adventure game, and I’m certainly not going to disagree. It’s a pleasure to play.

I’ll be back with another free games corner next week, and in the meantime pop on over to see me at Lazylaces if you need a daily dose of free games. Pip pip!
