Fujitsu develop new James Bond style file transfer system

Researchers at Fujitsu Labs have announced a new technology which which lets you transfer files from a computer to a mobile phone just by filming the screen with the phone camcorder. This means that one day we should be able to share photos, movies and documents between phones and computers just by pointing the phone at a screen, no clumsy apps to install or buttons to push.

The new technology, dubbed Video Meditated Communication, works by superimposing crucial IP, SSID and other identification data onto the computer screen, which is then transmitted to the phone to facilitate the file transfer. There is no need to alter the original file at all.

Once the address of the target or host computer has been transmitted to the phone, the software requests the file from the PC and it’s transferred via WiFi or Bluetooth as applicable. The whole process can happen very quickly, with no tricky configuration needed on either end. The video below demonstrates the process (no sound).

The developers are hoping it can be used to make transferring photos, presentation materials and other documents and files much easier than at present, and who knows, James Bond could one day be downloading the villain’s bank details from across the street using nothing more than his NokiaRola phone and a telephoto lens.

  • Intriguing stuff, it would certainly be really handy for all sorts of people. Business, mainly, but I'd bet teenagers would end up using it mainly! Not sure about the name, though; "Video Meditated Communication"? Seems a bit flamboyant.
