Garmin HUD gives your car GPS some cool cockpit style

Everyone wants to be cool, right? Like Top Gun cool. So it’s hardly surprising that the gadget makers spend so much time trying to fulfill our fantasies by producing stuff which a few years ago would be firmly in the science fiction category. And sometimes, the gear is actually not bad, even by Hollywood standards.

The Garmin HUD (for Heads Up Display) is one such product. The concept is to deliver an easy interface to their GPS navigation software by beaming it onto your windscreen or a special plastic reflector lens, so you can see what you need to do without squinting down at a small phone screen.

The kit only works with the Garmin range of software for smartphones, such as Navigon and StreetPilot, but even so it’s a pretty cool way to improve the GPS experience and make things perhaps a little safer. You lose the direct feedback a map gives you of course, which can be tricky when it comes to difficult junctions and things like roundabouts, but the gain is a more simple set of instructions using arrows and with less clutter.

It’s something of a luxury add-on accessory though, especially when you remember that smartphone screens, particularly on Android handsets are getting bigger by the day, but for a certain class of nervous driver we can see this being a valuable tool. The gadget costs $149.99 and syncs wirelessly with any compatible Bluetooth smartphone running the required GPS navigation software.
