We’re pretty used to video nowadays, we’ve got cameras on our phones, in our pens, even our heads once Goggle Glass starts shipping. But these devices are all single view, all they can do is capture footage of what you point the lens at. Boring. How much cooler to be able to capture your whole surroundings instantly and view whichever angle you want?

The Geonaute 360 Video Camera does just that. It features three 8 megapixel cameras with wide angle lenses, one button shooting and a battery life of around 2 hours before a recharge is needed. But the important thing, the really neat thing, is the fact that it captures video from all around your person, even upwards!

To use, you just switch it on, select photos or video and press the button. That’s it. The camera shoots at 25fps, and will also capture 150 degree vertical footage or images as well as 360 horizontal. The MP4 video footage (and JPG image stills) are stored on a microSD card, with up to 64GB supported and it will consume around 5GB of space per hour of recording.

The device sports a 3000mAh rechargeable battery and there’s an inbuilt microphone to capture all that delicious audio too. In order to interactively watch the 360 degree video you’ll need to use the company’s special website – playgeonaute.com – but you can watch it in plain non-interactive ‘flat’ panoramic mode on any computer or MP4 media player. You can visit the very cool interactive 360 degree video gallery at wesphere.com.

Editing 360 video is another issue, which the company promises to deliver shortly as the product gets closer to launch. The price of the camera will be $399 or €399 depending on location, including cable, battery, waterproof housing and mounting adapters.

  • Vidoes must be hosted on their properietary website in order to be viewed in 360 mode? Unless they offer an open-source way to host/share videos yourself, that’s a dealbreaker.

    • But you can always watch the videos in standard flat panoramic format anywhere.
