If you have a smartphone, there’s a very high probability that it has GPS built into it. This can be used for a lot of different functions, though one of the most basic is getting directions from point A to B. Unfortunately a lot of turn-by-turn navigation apps cost a good bit of money. But why pay for something, when there’s a free alternative out there?
Waze is an interesting navigation app that uses crowdsourcing for information. Just by turning on the app and driving, the app learns about roads, routes and traffic conditions. If someone else is using the app on a road that you’re planning on using, you can be notified if there is slow-moving traffic. You can also mark speed traps, accident locations, and more, just with a couple of taps. Like any good navigation software, Waze will guide you to your destination using turn-by-turn voice commands, in addition to the on-screen map. Just make sure that you’ve got a way to mount and charge the device while you’re using it in the car. You can download it to your iOS, Android, Blackberry or Nokia phone.
