Google Cardboard VR Toolkit – the cheapest – and coolest – virtual reality kit for your phone you can buy

The Oculus Rift is the VR baby of the tech world but it’s not the only game out there. In fact, for a few bucks you can actually build your own. Sure it won’t be as sleek as the Oculus Rift but the Google Cardboard VR Toolkit will definitely take you less time to build, and you won’t need gazillions in venture capital and a buyout to make your eyes happy.

The Google Cardboard VR toolkit is, as the name suggests, made from cardboard. The kit, which is based on Google’s original design, comes with all the pieces pre-cut and ready to assemble, but you have to provide your own cell phone. Note that not every phone is compatible, for example the Samsung Note is way too big for this set up, but there is a list of which ones are compatible, so you can check before you start.

It comes with a Biconvex lens which is equivalent to the Google I/O lens, and it also comes with all the bits and pieces needed to assemble the headset, including Velcro and a rubber band, and according to the manufacturer will take no more than five minutes to assemble. It looks pretty simple to us, but then again IKEA furniture says it’s simple too and I have more stories of failed chairs than actual chairs. You can order it with or without the NFC tag, totally up to you. The Google Cardboard VR toolkit starts at just $19.95.
