Google Mail Fetcher – at last a real spam solution?

Google Mail Fetcher. Mmm….Google seems to be in the process of rolling out a new service which will let you fetch email messages from 5 other non-Gmail POP accounts that you own. This could be a killer feature for the big G., since it should immediately let you take advantage of the superb Gmail spam filtering and clean up the naff stuff that other services leave in. You’ll also be able to forward messages to your mobile phone using the free Mobile Gmail service.

This is a rather significant development, peeps, and one which could really set things alight in the email space. I can’t access the new feature in my version yet, so can’t report on the functionality, but I’m suddenly itching for it to appear in my neighbourhood.

  • “superb spam filtering”?
I think not. I have quite a few mails which gmail spam filtering misses. and the number of “miss” is increasing steadily.

  • Hmm…yeah it’s a war all right. But I’m currently getting around 200 spam messages a day from one of my email accounts, so there’s no filtering going on there at all! :-) For that reason alone, I’m going to be loving the Gmail offering.

  • I’m a yahoo-groups comoderator, using my gmail address as my membership/moderator. I get all this really dump spam sent to me from Yahoo, which has been sent to the moderator’s yahoogroups address. The spammers send it to the yahoo address, yahoo _labels_ it with [spam] at the start of the subj: line, sends it to google, who promptly put it in my inbox. I can’t write a filter on [spam], I can’t get google to fix their spam filter to recognize something with [spam] in the subj:…

So I don’t hold out hopes that I’ll get really great spam filtering on stuff I import from other addresses. OTOH, there should be _some_, and it’s easier than checking all five of my active and significant email addresses every day!

  • Mmm…now that is weird Only.., I thought that the G spam filters were second only to Hotmail.
