Your phone is like your best friend, always there to provide helpful information, offer advice, and play games with you, but sometimes it seems like our friend wants a little space. You pull your phone from your pocket and it leaps from your hand or you set your phone on the corner of the table, only to discover a little later lying facedown on the floor, it’s mad dash for freedom cut short by the tragedy of a cracked screen. Fortunately, all is not lost and it’s possible for your friend to be whole again.
What you’ll need to fix a cracked smartphone screen:
- 1 minipack of sugru (black blends in well)
- scissors
- tissue paper
Step 1 – Witness the destruction.
Step 2 – Wipe and clean your screen with a tissue paper. Be careful not to pick up any loose glass when you’re rubbing. The bonding process works better when everything is clean and dust free.
Step 3 – Turn on your phone so you can see the boundaries of the screen. You don’t want to put sugru over your screen so you can’t see anything.
Step 4 – Use masking tape to mask off the screen area.
Step 5 – Cut open a minipack of sugru and tear off a tiny amount. Helpful Hint: Start small and then gradually add more if you need to.
Step 6 – Delicately place the sugru into the cracks and smear it gently over the surface of the glass, helping the glass bond together. This can take some time so be patient. There is no need to rush.
Step 7 – When you are happy that everything is stuck down and bonded together, gently glide your finger over the surface of the sugru to make it ultra smooth and to get rid of any fingerprints.
Step 8 – When you’re happy with your sugru finish, leave your phone to cure overnight (the sugru is so thin it won’t need the full 24 hour curing time!). The next morning, peel off the masking tape and your phone is almost as good as new! Woohoo!
Life can be mean to your phone but its thwarted attempt at freedom doesn’t mean it’s time for a replacement. By following the above tips, your smartphone should once again be ready to fulfill the role of best friend for you.
